Quick answer
Most cockroaches in Indian kitchens are one of two species. The German cockroach is small (10 to 15 mm), brown, with two dark stripes behind the head, and hides near the stove, sink and appliances. The American cockroach is large (about 4 cm), reddish brown, and comes up from drains. Three others turn up less often: the brown-banded, Australian and Oriental cockroach.
Knowing which one you have matters, because each hides in a different place and responds differently to treatment.
Which cockroaches are most common in Indian kitchens?
There is no national survey, but two Indian studies give a clear picture. In a 2025 household survey in Hyderabad by ANGRAU and NIPHM researchers, the German cockroach made up 68% of sightings, mostly behind stoves, drains and sinks, followed by the brown-banded and American cockroach. A study in Varanasi trapped only American and German cockroaches, and found them in 54% of homes and 77% of food-handling establishments surveyed.
Quick identification table
| Species | Adult size | How to recognise it | Where it hides in a kitchen | Eggs per capsule | Egg to adult |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| German cockroach Blattella germanica | 10 to 15 mm | Brown to dark brown, two dark parallel stripes behind the head | Behind the stove, fridge motor, microwave, sink cabinet, cracks in modular cabinets | 30 to 40, carried by the female | About 100 days |
| American cockroach Periplaneta americana | About 4 cm | Reddish brown, pale yellow band around the shield behind the head | Floor traps, drain chambers, under the sink, near water pipes | About 16, left near food | About 600 days |
| Brown-banded cockroach Supella longipalpa | 13 to 14.5 mm | Two pale bands across the wings | Higher and drier spots: upper shelves, electrical boxes, behind frames, furniture | 14 to 18 | About 160 days |
| Australian cockroach Periplaneta australasiae | 32 to 35 mm | Like the American cockroach but with a light yellow streak on the outer edge of each wing | Mainly outdoors and in gardens; indoors near pipes, sinks and cupboards | About 24 | About 1 year |
| Oriental cockroach Blatta orientalis | About 25 mm | Very dark brown to black and shiny; females have only tiny wing stubs | Cool, damp spots: under sinks, around drains | About 16 | Varies widely |
Sizes and life cycle figures are from University of Florida and Penn State extension fact sheets listed under Sources. All five species are recorded in India in the 2019 checklist of Indian cockroaches published in Zootaxa.
German cockroach: the kitchen specialist
The German cockroach lives only alongside people and cannot survive away from human buildings. A 2024 genetic study in PNAS found it probably evolved about 2,100 years ago from the Asian cockroach, by adapting to human settlements in India or Myanmar.
It is the hardest kitchen cockroach to control for two reasons. First, the female carries her egg capsule with 30 to 40 eggs until just before they hatch, so the eggs are protected from sprays and cleaning. Second, a full generation takes only about 100 days, so a few survivors rebuild the population within weeks.
Signs: small cockroaches running when you switch on the light, black pepper-like droppings in cabinet corners and hinges, and a musty smell in heavy cases.
American cockroach: the one from the drain
This is the large reddish cockroach most people in India simply call a cockroach. It lives in sewers, drain chambers and basements and comes into kitchens through floor traps, gaps around pipes and sink outlets, often at night. It grows slowly, taking around 600 days from egg to adult, but adults are long lived. The University of Florida notes that at least 22 species of disease-causing bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa have been isolated from field-caught American cockroaches.
What helps most: a cover on every floor trap, sealing gaps where pipes enter walls, and treating the drain chambers they breed in. Spraying the kitchen alone rarely solves it.
Brown-banded, Australian and Oriental cockroaches
Brown-banded cockroaches look like German cockroaches but prefer warmer, drier and higher places, so they turn up in bedrooms, upper shelves and inside electronics as well as the kitchen. A 2025 lab study found they survived 3.3 to 10.2 times longer than German cockroaches on most commercial gel baits, so they often need a different product.
Australian cockroaches are mostly outdoor insects found in gardens, wood piles and damp corners, and wander inside near water pipes and sinks.
Oriental cockroaches prefer cool, damp places such as drains. They are recorded in India but did not appear in the Hyderabad or Varanasi household studies.
Why the species decides the treatment
- Gel bait beats spray for German cockroaches. In an Indian field trial in catering establishments and homes, a single crack-and-crevice application of fipronil gel (0.01%) cut infestation by up to 96.8% after 12 weeks, and imidacloprid gel (2.15%) by 90.9%, while a pyrethroid aerosol did not give the desired reduction.
- Some cockroaches learn to avoid baits. Research published in Science in 2013 showed German cockroach populations evolved an aversion to glucose, the sugar used in many baits, so they stop eating them. A good operator rotates bait formulas instead of using the same one every visit.
- Drain cockroaches need drain work. American cockroaches are controlled at the drain chambers and entry points, not on the countertop.
- Brown-banded cockroaches need wider coverage. Because they hide away from the kitchen and respond poorly to many baits, treatment covers bedrooms and furniture too.
Health risks of kitchen cockroaches
Cockroach droppings and body parts are a recognised allergy trigger. The US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences links cockroaches to more severe asthma symptoms. A study of 476 children with asthma in US cities found that children who were both allergic to cockroaches and exposed to high levels were hospitalised more than three times as often as other children. Closer to home, a 1990 study in Delhi found that insect extracts, including German and American cockroach, caused positive allergy skin tests in asthma patients far more often than in healthy controls.
The Varanasi study also found Klebsiella, E. coli and other bacteria on cockroaches caught in homes and food outlets, some resistant to common antibiotics.
Kitchen checklist: where to look tonight
- Hinges and corners inside cabinets under and next to the sink.
- Behind and under the gas stove, the fridge (near the warm motor) and the microwave.
- Floor traps and the gap around the sink drain pipe.
- Inside switchboards and the back of the chimney hood.
- Cardboard boxes, newspaper stacks and gunny bags in the storage area.
Switch the kitchen light on suddenly an hour after dark. What runs and where it runs to tells you the species and the hiding spot.
Getting rid of them
For a light problem, keep food and garbage in containers with tight lids, do not leave dishes in the sink overnight, fix leaks, cover floor traps and seal cracks. These are the same prevention steps NIEHS recommends. If you still see cockroaches after two weeks, or you see small ones during the day, the population is established and needs professional treatment.
SKUAS uses odourless gel bait in cracks and hinges, targeted treatment of drains and entry points, and a follow-up visit. See our cockroach control service or read why cockroaches infest Delhi kitchens.
Frequently asked questions
What are the small brown cockroaches in my kitchen?
Almost always German cockroaches, especially if they have two dark stripes behind the head and hide near the stove and sink. If the bands run across the wings instead and you also find them in bedrooms, they are brown-banded cockroaches.
Are the big cockroaches and the small ones the same species?
No. Baby American cockroaches are small, but they are reddish and have no stripes. Small striped cockroaches are adult German cockroaches, not babies of the big ones.
Why do cockroaches come back after spraying?
Sprays miss the egg capsules, which German cockroach females carry until the eggs hatch, and many cockroaches avoid sprayed surfaces. Gel bait placed in hiding spots, plus a follow-up visit to catch newly hatched nymphs, works better.
Which cockroach is most dangerous?
The German cockroach is the bigger problem in kitchens because it lives right next to food and multiplies quickly. The American cockroach brings germs up from drains. Both carry bacteria and both trigger allergies.
